Catalonian
Sheepdog (Gos
d’Atura Catala) The Catalonian sheepdog is one of the few breeds that remains faithful to its origins, so much so that an example of the breed from the beginning of the last century would happily be able to take part in a dog show today. This breed is used for herding and as a companion. Because of its intelligence, the Gos D'Atura, like most sheepdogs, is easy to train. This cheerful dog excels at dog-sports, such as agility and doggy-dance. In spite of its appearance, this courageous dog is also used as a watch-dog. This breed is an "all-around-dog" and great companion. The Catalonian Sheepdog guards sheep without needing instruction. Enough (outdoor) action and distraction makes this dog a quiet and well-balanced home companion. The breed is appropriate for people with firm techniques and who can give the dog enough exercise. Early socialization is important, particularly if the dog will be around children. The dogs defend their family and become attached to it. The Catalonian Sheepdog as a breed found itself in peril of extinction during the second half of the last century as a result of enormous demographic changes throughout Catalonia which saw people leaving their farms to work in cities. It was in the early 70`s that work began to recover the breed. At
this time some of the last pure bred examples, notably Drap, Malic,
Daina, Cuca and Negra, were bought from shepherds and brought to
Espinavessa to start the Espinavessa line. Since that time there have
been more than 70 European and World champions from many
different countries such as Spain,
